Unclog An Epson 1400

The Epson Stylus Photo 1400 uses a print head to direct the tiny droplets of ink from the ink cartridges onto specific spots on the printer paper. Over time, ink droplets will dry in the print head's nozzles, causing a partial or complete clog and allowing more ink to accumulate in the nozzle. You will notice the printouts look spotty or broken. You'll notice the same symptoms from an ink cartridge that is low, but the red-ink light on the printer will be flashing if a near-empty cartridge is to blame.

Instructions

1. Press the 1400's "Power" button to turn it on and wait for the printer to fall silent. Turn on the attached computer and boot the operating system. If the printer is already on and in the middle of a print job, wait for the printer to finish before continuing.

2. Right-click on the small printer icon in the lower-right corner of the computer screen. Click on "Nozzle Check" in the menu that appears over the printer icon. Follow the directions in the window that appears to print the nozzle check pattern printout.

3. Examine the nozzle check pattern printout the printer produces, looking for any gaps in the lines on the printout. Click the "Clean" button if you see any gaps.

4. Select which print heads you wish to clean according to which section on the check-pattern printout had breaks or gaps. Wait for the printer to clean the print head, which will end once the printer's "Power" light stops flashing.

5. Click on the button labeled "Print Nozzle Check Pattern" on the computer's screen once the print head cleaning stops. Click the "Print" button to confirm, then wait for the printer to produce another check pattern printout.

6. Click the "Finish" button if you see no breaks in the lines on the printout. Click the "Clean" button to run the cleaning application again if you do see breaks in the lines. Run the application up to four times, then allow the printer to sit unused for six hours or more.
