The Best Energy Star Appliances

Energy Star appliances are the most efficient.

Saving on energy costs is very important for everyone these days. If you're looking for ways to cut your electric bill, energy-efficient appliances are a good way to start, and the Energy Star label appears on only the most efficient of them. The label has a clearly marked Energy Star logo, and tells you how much it costs to use the appliance per year. Savings aren't just in electricity either. Energy Star appliances like dishwashers and washing machines also save water, helping the environment.

Washing Machines

According to the Energy Star website, a qualified washing machine is designed to save 37 percent in electricity and up to 50 percent in water usage over older, less efficient washing machines. Frigidaire, LG, Samsung and Crosley all have models with the lowest energy usage per year in kilowatt hours (kWh). Kenmore, Maytag and Whirlpool offer models that use the least water.

Refrigerators and Freezers

Refrigerators that qualify for the Energy Star label must use 20 percent less energy than other models. If your current refrigerator is from the 1970s, you can save as much as $200 per year with an Energy Star refrigerator with better insulation and a more efficient compressor. Electrolux, Frigidaire, GE and Kenmore all have models that rate well for low usage of kWh/year in top, bottom and side-by-side refrigerators and freezers.

Central Air Conditioners

Energy Star ratings for air conditioners are developed according to Environmental Protection Agency efficiency standards. A new Energy Star air conditioning unit can reduce cooling costs as much as 30 percent each year. If your current unit is more than 12 years old, consider replacing it with a model from Bestek, Electrolux, Kelon USA or Midea USA, all of which have earned Energy Star labels.

Dishwashers

A new Energy Star dishwasher uses up to 10 gallons less water per wash cycle than a dishwasher made prior to 1994. Installing a new dishwasher can save up to $40 per year in electricity costs as well. Bosch and Thermador models use the least water, according to the Energy Star website, while Bosch stands alone in terms of electricity savings, at a mere 180 kWh per year for most of its standard models.
