Effectively Launder Smelly Towels

Sometimes getting a smelly odor out of towels can be very challenging. Some home remedies include using borax, white vinegar, an extra rinse cycle, Febreze, OxiClean, Lysol and hydrogen peroxide. Incorporating some of these solutions into your laundry routine will help to solve the mystery of smelly, nasty towels forever.

Oxiclean,Borax and Bleach

Add a full cup of OxiClean powder into your washing machine with your regular detergent. Start the machine with very hot water until all of the powder dissolves. Once all of the product has dissolved, you can switch to warm water.

Another alternative to try is adding some bleach to your wash, if you have white towels.

Also, you can add one cup of borax to your regular detergent. Borax is a detergent booster, helping the detergent do its work.

Extra Rinse Cycle with Vinegar or Febreze

Add an extra rinse cycle to your towel washing routine. Add one cup of white vinegar to the final rinse cycle and see if that helps with the smelly towels. One rinse cycle might not be adequate to completely rinse out all of the dirt, grime and sweat from towels.

Another option is to spray your towels lightly with Febreze as they come out of the dryer. This may help retain some of the fresh smell for a longer period of time. You may also spray the towels periodically with Febreze when they dry after your shower or bath.

Lysol and Hydrogen Peroxide

Try adding a half cup of Lysol with your detergent to eliminate the odor of smelly towels.

Hydrogen peroxide is also an option that can be added with your detergent to boost its effectiveness. It also breaks down proteins and is an antiseptic.

Cleaning the Washer Itself

Another problem area that may be contributing the problem of smelly towels is the accumulation of mold around the gasket area of the washing machine you are using. This tends to be a continual problem on some machines. If you have a severe mold problem in your washer, there are special washing machine cleaners, such as Affresh. Add some of this cleaner into your washer according to package directions, for a fresher washing machine.
