My Dishwasher Smells Like Mold Inside

Remove mold from your dishwasher with vinegar.

The dishwasher is supposed to keep dishes clean and sanitized, but when mold develops, it turns into a breeding ground for bacteria and odor. When you begin to notice the moldy smell, it is important to act quickly. Remove mold with mild ingredients safe for use in a dishwasher and also incorporate a cleaning routine that stops mold from developing in the future.

Why Your Dishwasher Smells Moldy

Mold typically forms in damp, dark areas. Your dishwasher is just this: a dark enclosed area that accumulates and holds excess moisture after a wash cycle completes. If you ignore the mold, it will grow at a rapid pace, and your dishwasher will look, smell and be an unsanitary area.

Allowing Your Dishwasher to Remove the Mold

Pour 1 quart white vinegar into the bottom of your dishwasher. Run a short wash cycle and the vinegar will dissolve mild growth of mold with no work will be required on your part. The vinegar works as a natural disinfecting agent that will kill not only the mold but also any odor or bacteria associated with the mold.

Removing the Mold by Hand

Wash the dishwasher by hand if the wash cycle does not get rid of all the mold. Fill a bowl with equal parts water and white vinegar, dip a cleaning rag into the mixture and scrub down your dishwasher. Use a sponge or old toothbrush to clean mold out of small corners and crevices. Run a short wash cycle after cleaning, again pouring a quart of water into the base of your dishwasher.

Preventing the Mold

To prevent mold, leave the dishwasher open the entire way or at least open on a small crack after a wash cycle. This allows the excess water that is sitting in your dishwasher to evaporate instead of standing in the unit until the next wash cycle.
