Fix HTML Errors
Hypertext markup language, or HTML, is the coding language used to format text and images on a web page. HTML uses tags at the beginning and end of an element to define the format of that element. For each opening tag there must be a corresponding closing tag. Tags must also be nested correctly. For example, when you open , then open , you must close before you close , otherwise you risk creating HTML errors. Most web pages have hundreds of tags which can make the task of debugging your page highly complex. Fortunately there are free tools available to help you.
Instructions
Identify and Correct HTML Errors
1. Visit validator.w3.org/. The World Wide Web Consortium or W3C is an international community of web developers that develops standards for HTML. They offer a free web page HTML validator that will identify errors on your web page and explain the causes of the errors.
2. Enter your web page URL into the address field and click the "Check" button. Your web page will be checked for errors according to the W3C HTML standards and a report of the errors found will be generated.
3. Correct the errors listed on the report. Each error will provide a line number and column number where the error can be found on your web page. The error will be highlighted in red and a detailed explanation of the problem will be provided to help you make the necessary corrections. Complex errors will include detailed correction recommendations.
4. Run the W3C validator again once you have corrected the errors listed on the report. If there are still errors showing in the report, make the necessary corrections. Repeat the process until the W3C validator reports no errors.
