What Is Acrylic Glassware

Acrylic glassware looks almost like real glass.

Acrylic glassware is a type of acrylic plastic that is formed into different styles of glassware, such as cups, tumblers, stemware, wine glasses and champagne glasses. Acrylic plastic is a form of polymer glass that is used in many different industries. Acrylic glassware is an alternative to more traditional glassware for everyday use and non-formal social occasions. The versatility of the glassware makes it an attractive option for many families and businesses.

Composition

Acrylic glassware is made from acrylic plastic. Acrylic plastic is a form of hard plastic that is typically made from polymethyl methacrylate. One of the largest contributors to the composition of acrylic glass is acrylic acid, which is how the plastic gets its name. Acrylic plastic will not discolor in UV rays, nor does it break easily.

Benefits

There are many benefits to using acrylic glassware rather than regular glass. Acrylic glassware is sturdy and can take rougher handling than real glass. Acrylic glassware is also resistant to UV light. The plastic can be cut or molded into almost any shape and holds colors well. Acrylic glassware can be washed in the dishwasher and can withstand the heat of a commercial dishwasher. Some businesses choose to use acrylic glassware over disposable glasses because they are reusable, which is better for the environment. The expense of acrylic glassware also is often much less than that of glass.

Problems

Even though there are many benefits to acrylic glass, there are a few problems as well. The plastic can crack easily, making the surface of the glass show many fine, white lines across the surface of the glass. If dropped, the plastic can chip. The glasses also spot easily and cannot be cleaned with abrasive materials. Although the plastic looks similar to glass, it does not have the shine and sparkle of real glass and looks inappropriate in formal situations.

Considerations

Acrylic glassware is not right for everyone. Each person or business must determine whether or not acrylic glassware is right for them. Things to consider include: What you intend to use the glasses for; how long you want your glasses to last; whether or not you plan to use the glasses outdoors; and if you want to wash glasses by hand.

Lifespan

According to the company Kano Korn, manufacturer of acrylic glassware, acrylic glassware will last three to four times longer than traditional glassware. This is because of the sturdy construction of the acrylic plastic and the break-resistant nature of acrylic glassware.
