Make An Island From Stock Base Cabinets

A kitchen island can be built from stock base cabinets.

Islands have become popular centerpieces in the modern kitchen. According to the website thisoldhouse.com, their popularity is based on the functionality of the island and its access from all four sides. The island can serve as a food preparation surface, a serving area or both. With a little planning, one can be constructed from stock base cabinets and an appropriate countertop.

Instructions

1. Plan the kitchen island. According to thisoldhouse.com, a useful island is at least four-feet long and two-feet deep. However, you must allow for movement around the island, as well as the operations of kitchen appliances. Make sure enough space is left between the wall cabinets and the island so the doors of the dishwasher, oven and refrigerator can all be fully opened. Sketch out the possible size of the island.

2. Research the sizes of stock base cabinets. Base cabinets come in a variety of widths from 18 to 36 inches.

3. Test place the cabinets in the kitchen, according to the website esyrenovate.com. Position them exactly where you want and place painter's tape on the floor close to the four corners. Measure the thickness of the cabinet walls at the floor level.

4. Remove the cabinets and fasten a six-inch long piece of two-by-four lumber at a point that is the distance of the cabinet walls width from the painter's tape corners. Fasten the two-by-fours to the floor with 3-1/2-inch wood screws using a screwdriver or electric drill.

5. Replace the cabinets over the corner blocks. Fasten the countertop over the stock base cabinets and fasten in place with 1-1/4-inch drywall screws driven into the bottom of the countertop through the supports on the top of the base cabinets.

6. Cover the back of the cabinets with finished plywood or pre-finished paneling. Use finishing nails to hold this back piece in place.
