Secure A Counter Top

Be sure counter tops are fastened securely.

Counter tops provide valuable workspace in your kitchen, bathroom or home office. Whether you're installing new counter tops or need to refasten existing counter tops that have come loose, it's important to know keep your counter top securely in place.

Instructions

1. Remove the existing screws and fill any holes that have been stripped out. Fill the holes with toothpicks covered with wood glue. Hammer the toothpicks gently into the hole. Let the glue dry completely and use a razor knife to cut off the ends of the toothpicks. You can skip this step if you're installing new counter tops, or if your counter tops have no stripped out holes.

2. Place counter top in line with the cupboards. Measure the length of the fastener screw you're using to secure the counter top. The fastener screw must be shorter than the counter top. Place tape around your drill bit the same length as the screw, to use as a guide. Hold your drill straight and drill a hole for the screw. Insert the screw into the corner brace and fasten it. Repeat at each cupboard corner.

3. Apply wood glue or caulk along the counter top where it meets the counter, if you want. This can help fasten your counter top but can also make it difficult if you want to remove it in the future.
