A range of companies have created their own version of the microwave. Some advancements in microwave technology include microwaves that keep food warm after cooking, microwaves that have doors that swing upwards and microwaves that are steam assisted.
Location
Microwaves can either be placed on the countertop or built into the actual kitchen itself. Microwaves built into the kitchen are known as over-the-range (OTR) microwaves. The advantage of built-in microwaves is that they don't take up any counter space and often have more features. However, they can also be more expensive and need to be installed by a professional. Countertop microwaves, also known as portable or compact microwaves, come in a wide variety of sizes. Consumers should measure the amount of counter space they have available before purchasing a countertop microwave. Larger microwave ovens are typically used in restaurants because they can cook large quantities of food at once.
Brands
Numerous companies have developed their own brand name version of the microwave oven. Such companies include GE, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, Sharp, Panasonic and LG. According to Consumer Reports, GE microwave ovens are the most desired by consumers. Countertop versions range from 0.8 cubic feet to 2.0 cubic feet in size. Over the range models take up 1.5 to 2.0 cubic feet of space. Kenmore models take up 1 to 2 cubic feet of space in a kitchen. Brand name microwaves can be purchased in a variety of locals, including Sears, Target, Lowe's, Best Buy, Walmart and other such stores.
Prices
Microwave prices are determined by their make, model and size. Sharp microwaves can range between $200 and $1,000 as of 2010. Panasonic microwaves range from $110 to $700 in price. LG offers microwaves between $300 and $800. Kenmore microwaves range between $200 and $800. Frigidaire microwaves cost between $250 and $450. Over-the-range models of the GE microwave can cost between $200 and $1,400 while countertop versions range between $70 and $350. GE countertop microwaves are the cheapest brand name microwaves on the market.
