Homemade Metal Detector Digging Tools

Metal detecting is a fun and fascinating hobby for the entire family. Although you will have to invest in a metal detector, several items you need to dig for hidden treasure you already have in your own home or can obtain for very little cost.

Treasure is waiting

Join a Treasure Hunting Club

Junk store treasure

To get started in the hobby, join a metal detecting club and learn by observation. Rent a metal detector and try demonstration models prior to choosing one of your own. These clubs often have annual sales of used equipment and some excellent values can be found on used detectors. Pawn shops and junk stores are other places to search for your first detector.

Inexpensive Tools

When processing shovelfuls of sand or aggregate to locate a signal, you have to classify the material and sift it through a screen to isolate your treasure. Instead of buying expensive commercial classifying screens, use an old colander, a flower sifter or kitchen strainer. These simple household items work well enough and they are lightweight and portable.

Crack and Crevice Tools

Helpful Kitchen Tools

Old kitchen spoons make useful digging tools and work especially well in confined areas. Many targets may be hidden deep in the crevice of a rock. A sturdy table knife makes a useful narrow trowel for scraping out cracks and crevices and working in tight areas.

Garden Tools

Handy garden shovels

Garden tools can be re-purposed as treasure digging tools. A one-piece aluminum garden trowel is a multi-task tool that every metal detecting hunter wants in their backpack.

Plastic or aluminum ice or grain scoops can also be re-purposed as digging tools.

Lots of Buckets

Buckets For Digging

Purchase household laundry powders and dishwasher soaps in large plastic buckets. You save by purchasing in bulk and you then have a supply of heavy duty buckets for all your metal detecting needs.
