Make Dish Detergent For Washing Dishes By Hand

Making your own house cleaning products can save you money.

Making your own dish soap is a great activity if you're looking to save a little money on your housekeeping supplies, to use more natural methods of housekeeping, or if you just enjoy making your own products. There is also the added benefit of minimizing the way soap can dry your skin or aggravate skin allergies. With simple supplies you should be able to find at a store near you, you can easily make your own dish soap that is effective yet safe.

Instructions

1. Combine 1 gallon warm water with 2 cups soap flakes. Place this mixture in a large pan, and warm over low heat until the soap dissolves. Add the glycerin, if using, and remove from the heat.

2. Allow the mixture to cool, and then add 1/2 cup lemon juice or white vinegar. Both work well for breaking down grease on your dishes. You may want to try both to see if you have a preference. If you would like the soap to have some kind of scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil. Mix it well, and store it in your gallon container.

3. Use solid soap shavings, such as a grated bar of Ivory, instead of soap flakes. For this method, combine 2 cups of the soap shavings and 2 or 3 cups of hot water in a large bowl. Let it sit overnight, which will soften the soap. Stir the mixture until it is a smooth consistency, and then add 1/2 cup lemon juice or white vinegar. Store in a large, airtight container.

4. Use castile soap instead. Simply purchase a bottle of pure castile soap, available at many retailers. Combine 2 cups castile soap with 1/2 cup warm water in a container, such as an old dish soap bottle. Add essential oils if desired. Mix well, and it is ready for use.
