Dirty mini blinds detract from the appearance of your home and collect dust and grime that causes people with allergies to suffer, so cleaning them periodically is important. The best way to clean them depends on the material they are made of, as well as how much dust has collected on them.
Prevention
Dust blinds weekly with a feather duster by closing the blinds and dusting, then turning them closed in the other direction and dusting the other side. Maintaining your blinds in this manner makes heavier cleaning an easier task.
Material
Cleaning methods vary, depending on the material being cleaned. Clean vinyl or metal mini blinds using 1/2 cup white vinegar in 1 gallon of water, drying each slat after cleaning. On wood blinds, spray your cloth with furniture polish, and wipe each slat. Use a vacuum attachment to remove dust from fabric blinds. Do this at least once a month.
Deep Cleaning
Every three to six months, take your vinyl and metal blinds down for a complete cleaning. This also reduces your exposure to household contaminants. Take the blinds outside, scrub them with a soft-bristled brush, and spray them with a hose. In bad weather, wash the blinds under running water in the bathtub. Do not clean wood or fabric blinds in this manner.
Tips
A cleaning glove, created from a terry cloth-like material, works well for getting into crevices and around the strings of mini blinds for thorough cleaning. Call a blind-cleaning professional to thoroughly and safely clean large, expensive blinds or those made of wood or fabric.
