The Best Way To Wash Mini Blinds

Mini blinds
are attractive alternatives to traditional curtains and drapes that look great in any design scheme. However, the metal or plastic slats of mini blinds seem to attract dust and dirt. To keep them looking good, mini blinds need to be dusted often with a feather duster or soft cloth. However, over time, they need to washed with water. You can wash larger mini blinds while they hang, but be prepared to deal with water on your floor. Smaller mini blinds can get a good cleaning in your bathtub.

Take the Blinds Down

You can wash your mini blinds while they are still hanging at the window using a spray cleaner and a sponge or cloth. However, you won't do a really thorough cleaning job and the task might prove a messy one. The best way is to take the blinds down from the window.

Pull the cord to raise the blinds fully at the window. Then release the plastic locking assembly that holds the mini blind rod into the wall-mounting brackets by sliding either left or right on each side. You can remove the blind's shutter wand by removing it from its plastic wand assembly if desired for easier handling--but it is not necessary. Lift up on the rod slightly to remove the blind completely from the bracket.

Water Bath

Lay a large bath towel into the bottom of a bathtub to prevent the blinds from scratching the surface of the tub. Run about 4 inches of warm or hot water into the tub. Add 1 cup of sudsy ammonia. Submerse the mini blind into the tub of water. Let soak for about five minutes.

Place a large towel on the floor in front of the tub to soak up any water that ends up on the floor. Bending over the tub, pick up the blind at the rod and pull on the cord to open the shutters. Then lay the blind against the side of the tub.

Washing the Blinds

Working in sections, spray the mini blind with a good cleaner like Spray Nine. Use a sponge or soft rag to wipe the length of each slat clean. Clean the slats of one entire side of the mini blind before turning the blind over and cleaning the opposite side in the same way. Rinse thoroughly.

You can re-hang the blind while still wet. Replace the shutter wand and the locking assemblies. Use the shutter wand to angle the slats in a vertical direction so any accumulated water can drip off.
