Three major consumer reporting agencies track spending and payments by Americans. While these agencies---Equifax, Experian and TransUnion---have the most data collected, other agencies specialize in tracking various types of payments, such as rent payments. As the credit-monitoring industry expands, having accurate information on credit reports is becoming more important to every consumer's ability to participate in the economy.
Instructions
1. Collect all appropriate identification data. For example, a Social Security number and address history will be required. Also, know the accounts you have open and closed, with corresponding dates. Have a current credit report from each agency, and call at nonpeak times of the day---typically, early morning---to get faster service.
2. Contact each major agency. If you are correcting an error, have verification of your payment that can be faxed or mailed directly to the agency.
3. Obtain the representative's name and/or ID number. Be polite but firm, and be willing to provide copies of cleared checks or credit card statements that support your request for correcting any errors. Maintain a record of each conversation with the credit reporting agencies, as well as all written correspondence.
4. Request a confirmation letter to provide proof of your conversation with the agency representative.
