Repair A Kenmore Washer Coupler

Repair a Kenmore Washer Coupler

Repairing the coupler in a Kenmore washer is a process that can be done in less than an hour. The Kenmore brand of appliances is part of the Whirlpool line and uses many of the same mechanical designs and systems, including the three-piece coupling system between the washer's motor and pump. Learn to repair the washer coupler yourself and save the time and expense of calling out a repairman to fix your Kenmore washer.

Instructions

1. Unplug the electrical cord of the Kenmore washer from the electrical outlet and turn off the water supply at the valves behind the washer.

2. Remove the screws on the ends of the control console at the back of the washer with a screwdriver.

3. Tilt the control console back so that it rests on the back hinges and locate the electrical switch on the backside of the top lid of the washer.

4. Unplug the electrical switch on the top lid, pulling it out by hand. Locate the metal clips on the top of the dryer that sit underneath the control console.

5. Slide a screwdriver underneath the clips on top of the washer and lift up to dislodge the clips.

6. Pull the top lid off the washer cabinet, setting it out of the way. Locate the motor and shaft at the bottom of the cabinet.

7. Slide the two clips off of each side of the pump with a screwdriver.

8. Slide the pump off the motor shaft, leaving the hoses attached to the pump. Locate the motor harness plug attached to the motor.

9. Remove the motor harness plug from the motor, unplugging it by hand, and unfasten the two clips that hold the motor in place with a screwdriver.

10. Tip the motor back in order to access the motor shaft. Use a screwdriver to lift the old plastic coupler from off the motor.

11. Turn the pump over and locate the white plastic coupler, prying the old coupler off with a screwdriver.

12. Slide a white plastic coupler over the motor shaft with the prongs facing away from the motor. Place the new black rubber coupler over the new plastic coupler.

13. Position another new white plastic coupler over the black rubber coupler with the prongs facing in toward the rubber coupler. Slide the clips back over the motor.

14. Place the pump back onto the motor shaft and slide the pump down against the couplers, securing the clips over the pump.

15. Reattach the motor harness plug into the motor and place the washer top back over the cabinet base.

16. Plug the top lid switch into the back of the lid and flip the metal clips down on the back of the top lid to lock it into place.

17.Flip the control console back down over the top lid and secure the console with screws on each end.

18. Turn the water supply back on at the valves on the wall behind the washer and plug the Kenmore washer back into the electrical outlet.
