Troubleshooting your Whirlpool washer may be extensive or simple. If the problem is not easily found, you may have to remove the cabinet to investigate further. You also should have an ohmmeter ready to be able to test the switches on your machine for current---this is the best way to check for a defective switch.
Your Washer Is Not Working or Making Noise
When your washing machine is not working and making any noise, you'll want to check a few different areas. First make sure that the washer is plugged in securely. Then check the breaker and/or the fuse box.
If all that checks out, test the circuit with your ohmmeter for current. Check the water-supply valves and make sure they're turned on. Look at the filter screens and make sure that they're not obstructed with dirt or debris.
Your Machine Is Making Noise but Not Working
If your machine is making noise but not working, you likely have a defective water-supply valve. Check the valve to see that it's not obstructed in any way. Inspect your filter screens. Test the machine for overheating. Inspect the water pump for defects. Test the water inlet valve and test the motor.
Cold or Hot Water Is Not Entering Your Machine
If your machine is working but hot or cold water is not entering the machine, check that the water-supply valves are turned on. Inspect the water-supply hoses and make sure that they're not kinked, obstructing water flow. Check the filter screens. Test the water-level switch, timer control, water temperature switch and water inlet valve to make sure they're not defective.
