Replace A Thermostat In A Ge Hotpoint Range

The thermostat on a General Electric Hotpoint range controls the temperature inside the oven. Many times the thermostat can be adjusted, but if it is dysfunctional, it must be replaced. The thermostat can be replaced by the owner of the range by following a procedure that will save over a hundred dollars on a service call. A new thermostat is purchased online or locally from a General Electric Hotpoint authorized parts dealer. The installation takes about an hour.

Instructions

1. Unplug the electrical cord of the range and move it away from the wall to access the rear.

2. Detach the rear panel of the range using a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that secure it in place.

3. Disconnect the wires from the thermostat using a pair of needle-nosed pliers. The wires attach to the thermostat with a clip and are pulled off with the use of the pliers.

4. Pull off the control knob for the thermostat on the control panel. Remove the two screws that secure the thermostat to the range.

5. Trace the thin tube from the side of thermostat to the thermal bulb, which is located on the oven liner. The thermal bulb is attached with a clip which is removed by hand. Pull the tube and the bulb through the back of the oven and unclip the tube from the rear panel. Dispose of the old thermostat assembly.

6. Install the new thermostat by inserting the bulb and the tube through the rear of the range. Clip the bulb in place where the old one was removed. Clip the tube to the rear of the range where the old tube was secured. Secure the thermostat with the two screws where the old one was located.

7. Clip the wires onto the thermostat. Slide the control knob onto the new thermostat stem and reattach the back panel of the range. Slide the range back in place and plug the electrical cord into the wall outlet.
